Cognitive performance tests were also administered with 411 typically developing school children for 4 months in order to explore whether an association between behaviour and/or cognitive performance and DHA levels exists. Measures of reading, spelling and intelligence did not show any association with DHA levels, but some associations were noted with the level of omega-3 fatty acids and teacher and parental reports of behaviour, with some evidence that higher omega-3 levels were associated with decreased levels of inattention, hyperactivity, emotional and conduct difficulties and increased levels of prosocial behaviour. the clinical trials with 485 children aged 8 -10 years old showed unsatisfactory results on the improvement of cognitive and behavioral outcome after an oral intake of DHA fish oil for 4 months (reported in Res Dev Disabil. 2010 May-Jun;31(3):731-742).
